BBETWEEN HAS ARRIVED - in summary the journey
Bbetween exists to inspire and inform our industry, the design community and the people who engage with us. It seeks to highlight applied education in it’s true form and invites commentary from many aspects of the community.
This year the theme ‘Demonstrating the Value of Design (thinking)’ was born out of the desire for us to speak to an audience broader than just our own design community. We wanted to share some insight into what designers do, and respond to the new trendy word in the Business world, Design Thinking.
In it’s third edition BBetween has moved from exploring our Billy Blue Culture (in the first edition), to being an insightful discussion about Sydney and Melbourne design scenes (in the second edition), to this year extending our arm to the business world, our clients and our future employers through the exploration of design thinking.
I would like to thank Matt Leach for his hand in establishing this great journal in edition 1 and 2 and the very beginning stage of between 3. Matt was the editor and driving force behind the earlier editions .
BBetween 3 began it’s infancy within small conversation between Matt, Andrew and myself late last year, and started to steam ahead once we approached Alex Blunt from Second Road to give us her thoughts on an edition that would explore the concept of Design Thinking. Back in February this year we began the workshop process, and invited a bunch of industry representatives to join in the conversation at what we called The Bbetween Mixer. It was at this event we first began to shape what this journal would be and what it would explore. Thank you to all the people who took part in that mixer.
Fast forward to April, after many a ‘conversation capture’ and planning of what we were to put our minds to, we formed our student design team and editorial collection crew. We all took part in a rigorous workshop lead by Alex Blunt at Second Road to get the project started and the design team in the mode of ‘design thinking’. A huge thank you to the team at Second Road for your contribution to this Project.
BBetween 3, as stated it’s opening credits, exists because of a huge collaborate effort by all involved.
I would like to thank our contributors to this journal. Contributions for this edition included, articles, interviews, poetry and visual responses to the brief. We feature perspectives from design, business and community organisations.

A huge thank you goes to our fabulous student design team. This is a group of dedicated students who kindly gave up their winter holiday break (and much more) to work full time to make this Journal come to life. Even the Swedish members of the team who returned home for the break continued development of work via many skype conversations (at odd hours of the day) and project tasks. We even managed to get one of our ‘A’ grade graduates from July to hang around to help us with the job.
I would like to thank:
Paul O’Conner
Stephen AU
Ben Mayo
Anne Dahlin
Sophie Zetterberg
Whitney Smartz
Diana Chirilas
Helgi Kormaksson
And our lead Illustrator for the Journal Elizabeth Robb
The Student Design team were lead by 2 dedicated staff members as Design Directors for this edition. A big thank you to Kuen Kam and Steph Yates for your time and commitment to this Project.
I would also like to thank the collectors of content for this edition,

To K.W.Doggett for the gorgeous Impact paper. A very big thank you to Centrum Printing for your help with the production of the book and the very generous amount of time you spent with our students in sharing the production side of the design process.
